General Discussion / Re: COVID Errata
« on: March 05, 2023, 05:24:30 pm »
This week I'll be getting a full spectrum of blood tests done which will be good! I'll then have a copy that I can bring to my family doctor for him to check out if the naturopath doesn't have answers.  I'll be happy to just get some answers because I miss my old levels of energy. Hope life is treating you well, I like running into your posts every so often on permies!

Lol I'm sure I will figure out the fatigue in time. I do think you're right about the companies not being able to be held liable. I understand that at the time of release these were emergency efforts and everything about the process was expedited.

What stands out to me is that this paper has been out since September 2022, and the mass vaccination campaigns have shown no sign of slowing down. Previous campaigns were stopped when serious adverse events exceeded 1 in 10,000 vaccinees, or 1 in 100,000. In addition, Canada pledged last year to build a plant specifically for manufacturing mRNA vaccines.  Right now it seems as if this mRNA technology is not yet ready to be used for safe mass vaccination. It is discussed in the video how it could be a fantastic personalized cancer treatment for folks with stage 3 or 4 cancers, but it isn't ready for a one size fits all use, as people's reactions to it cannot be accurately predicted.

What worries me is the current silence about it in the mainstream. Again I don't care a whole lot what is tiring me out, I'd just like to get better. But the current risks of mRNA technology needs to be seriously considered before we continue with mass vaccinations using it. As of now I see no evidence of this consideration, and it's concerning!

General Discussion / Re: COVID Errata

If you folks want to liven stuff up we can discuss the mRNA vaccines for covid. Normally like nearingsfault I spend my time on other places focused on homesteading and low energy living so I don't come around here much. But I know a discussion on permies about the vaccine would quickly turn pretty messy and also just not be allowed.

So I've been having fatigue, every single day now, for over a year. Not "I can't get out of bed" fatigue levels but I only ever have about 60-80% of my previous energy levels. I always have dark circles under my eyes. This is all constant no matter how well I sleep, how healthy my diet is, and how healthy my social life is. I have lower stress than I used to as I'm more organized than I used to be. Nothing radical has changed in my life in the past year. So suffice to say it's quite frustrating.

I was originally leaning towards long covid as the culprit. And although I was sad, I wasn't angry or anything. Covid is just doing what viruses do. It was only recently that I decided to get some professional help with this. I tried contacting my family doctor, but on the days I tried calling the line was busy for the entire hour and a half that I tried to get through. So I tried calling my city's naturopath who my mom and sister go to regularly.

During our consultation, we talked about all the possible factors: sleep, diet, exercise, etc. When she'd gotten the gist that I'm quite healthy in all these areas, she suggested blood tests to find out what's going on. She asked if I thought anything not covered might be the culprit, and I suggested long covid. She said, "Yes that could be possible, but have you considered the covid vaccine?" I thought, oh no I am paying out of pocket to talk with an anti vaxxer? I said no I hadn't thought of that, and she mentioned they'd been seeing a lot of issues coming from the covid vaccines recently.

When I hung up I was still not really considering the vaccines as a factor, and I had lost a bit of respect for her for suggesting it.

But then I went on Youtube and went to Dr. John Campbell's channel. You folks might remember him from the beginning of the pandemic. He makes research based videos on all sorts of covid related stuff such as masks, different variants of covid, studies on vitamin d and ivermectin etc. I had noticed over recent months that his videos were still popping up in my feed, and I was wondering what he had so much to say about. Covid is ongoing yes, but it seems to be a new variant once in a while when it comes to news.

What he has been talking about is new data coming out about the mRNA vaccines. He made a video about this paper https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9428332/ here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYR1wz-Cf_M&t=6s&ab_channel=Dr.JohnCampbell

The paper is a reanalysis of the data from the original phase III trials for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. What they found is that for every 800 vaccine recipients, there is one serious adverse event of special interest (SAESI). These SAESIs are listed in the paper, but some include arthritis, pericarditis/myocarditis, and coagulation disorders.

If you don't feel like reading the paper, here is a letter from the authors of the paper addressing the medical community. https://sensiblemed.substack.com/p/why-we-question-the-safety-of-covid

I like this quote, "Consider a 1 in 800 risk of a serious adverse reaction in the context of other vaccines.  The 1976 swine flu vaccine was withdrawn after it was associated with Guillain-Barre Syndrome at a rate of approximately 1 in 100,000. In 1999, the rotavirus vaccine Rotashield was withdrawn following reports of intussusception in about 1 or 2 in 10,000.  As widely acknowledged, COVID vaccines prevent hospitalizations, and the clinical trials estimated that between 225 and 625 hospitalizations were prevented per million vaccinated persons. But these benefits are likely to be concentrated among vaccinees who are elderly or have chronic illnesses. It is less clear which groups are at risk for serious adverse vaccine reactions. Those at low risk for hospitalization may still be at risk of serious vaccine reactions. "

They end their paper by saying that to do proper risk-benefit analysis, they need participant level data such as age and sex of the vaccinees. However Pfizer and Moderna have refused to make these data public.

The second video I'd like to share is this one about the immunology of mRNA vaccines. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMyERFBdB4E&ab_channel=Dr.JohnCampbell

In this one John talks with Robert Clancy about how the vaccines work, and what can go wrong. This was sort of the 'holy ****' video for me. Now if you don't have 35 minutes to watch the conversation it's alright, I took notes. Yeah I'm a nerd, shoot me. They are attached. But please do watch the video if you can.

Now for me personally, I don't really care if my fatigue is caused by long covid or if it's a side effect of the vaccine. I just want to improve and get back to how I used to be, or at least closer to it. But big picture, it seems to me that these mRNA vaccines are not only not ready for the world stage, they never should have made it past initial testing.

I've shared this with my family just so they're aware, but I haven't shared it anywhere else until now because I don't want to be labelled an anti vaxxer - I promise I'm not! It isn't a good label to have as a young guy about to enter the job market. Anyways, this may liven discussion up here.

I could see in the next few years reparations needing to be paid out for the damages caused by the rapid rollout of these vaccines.

RE

I googled those folks and Wikipedia said they're an alt-right, neo-nazi group. I clicked on theit website so I am now certainly on a watchlist if I wasn't already. I started reading their stuff and saw mostly anti-state stuff and railing against globalization and I thought 'huh they're disgruntled but not racist by the looks of it'. Then I scrolled down a bit further and saw the stuff about too much race mixing and 'dilution by foreign races' and gagged a bit.

I've got to give it to them, whoever wrote their manifesto knows how to write. Disturbing stuff though.

Speaking of inflicting economic pain...

Ukraine war could 'skyrocket' U.S. gas prices to $5 per gallon — or more

RE

What's the average right now? Where I live we're at $1.67 per litre which is almost exactly $5 a gallon. Sure am enjoying my tiny car. 78hp 3 cylinder makes it not very cool or fast but the highest fill up I've had so far is $40! I know the day is coming when pick up trucks will no longer be the most purchased vehicle in North America.

I'm not sure if you mean the emergency powers that were invoked yesterday by the federal government or not. If that was happening earlier I was not aware of it.

Not sure about other countries but here in Canada the road blocks seem to be the problem. From what I am reading the protestors had plenty of warning to leave the bridge, including a court order? So it doesn't seem to me like it was a surprise in any way. Like RE says each day the roads are blocked the capitalists are losing cash which is not good! Lol.

I think if I knew more people who were supportive of these protests I might have more sympathy...but I don't. Still just the one guy at the grocery store.

As far as emergency powers go, I am curious to see if these stay around for only 30 days or end up being extended over and over. I'm going to guess no, because Trudeau didn't do it for all of covid until now. Ontario has declared a state of emergency a couple times now. I am continuing to watch this ordeal with a lot of interest.

Canada protests: After police cleared bridge, is this the end?

RE

I recently watched some Beau of the Fifth column videos on this situation, I enjoyed his perspective. He's an ex-cop and an anarchist I think so he always has some interesing stuff to say. He talked about how the police handled clearing the bridge in Alberta, and he said it couldn't have been done any better. The calls of "tyrannical government" and "we have lost all freedom" lose their glimmer when you see these people standing around blocking roads for a couple weeks without any violent intervention by the state. He said to crack down hard is a big mistake, because then you get the photos and videos of the 'average' Canadian being beaten or roughly arrested by the police and that only strengthens the movement because folks that were previously on the sidelines are angered and brought on. He said that in letting the movement lose steam on its own and then moving in the remove the remaining protestors, the police effectively completely removed the protestors without any violence.

The issue with this tactic is that you need to balance waiting for the movement to fizzle with keeping local residents from getting too angry. My brother lives in ottawa, thankfully not downtown, but he knows other shift workers that are very tired of the honking happening all day making it much harder to fall asleep.

I know of one person who supports these protests. And a lot of my friends are not near as left-leaning as I am. I am not a fan of the mandates and am all for protest, but blocking roads and disturbing the peace with incessant honking I do not agree with. This sure has been a wild ride to keep up with though, wowza.

Good thinking. I bet more folks will be thinking that way as prices for a lot of stuff continue to climb, energy included. Nice work setting the example.

My first thought after seeing heat pumps listed was "will it work in Canada" then I saw the linked article talking about a house in Alaska using a heat pump to warm the house. Wow!! And to think i hadn't even heard of those things up until recently.

General Discussion / Re: Smartphones Are a New Tax on the Poor
« on: December 20, 2021, 09:00:23 am »
It's actually worse than this article relates.  In higher paying jobs if an employee needs a phone for work he is issued a"work phone" for free with the monthly bill paid for by the company.  These phones often come with huge data plans and don't cost the employee a dime.  Harry who was the second Diner IT Adminn after Peter retired had such a plan.  At the first Diner Convocation at Eddie's Doomstead, he provided the internet connectivity through his work phone.  Aperson with such a company phone can then cut their personal plan coontract to the minimum, and just use it for talk or text messaging.  So their personal cost is reduced.

You simply cannot function in this society anymore without a smartphone.  Often companies don't even publish their phone numbers, and the only way to even apply for a job is thru an online app.  Goobermint agencies usually provide a phone number, but the hold times on these an stretch into hours.  If you don't have a car, the only way to order an Uber cab is with an app.

Now, I don't like the fact everyone needs to carry one of these gadgets and keep it on all the time so Google and Da Goobermint can keep track of you anymore than most of you, but you just can't avoid it anymore.  If you don't have one, it's just about as bad as being homeless (which you probably are).

Well before Universal Basic Income, there needs to be Universal Basic Communications.  A basic smartphone which can be had these days for around $200, and a monthly plan with unlimited data which right now I pay $75 for from ATT.  Everyone needs one of these to appear like an upstanding potential employee, even if they are living in a tent under a bridge in Seattle.

Smartphones Are a New Tax on the Poor

RE

Prepaid phones are a sneaky way around the big bills. I bought my current phone new for $200. Used ones, at least in Canada can get as cheap as $55 for an unlocked smartphone that is professionally refurbished. I have actually gotten two phones from this company, both functioning very well https://www.themobilebase.ca/collections/cell-phones?sort_by=price-ascending.  I pay on average about $20 per month. That gives me more than enough talk minutes, as well as 500mb of what I call emergency data (only used when I have no access to wifi which is very rare). I buy my minutes in 600 minute segments for $30, and the $500mb of data is $20 I think. There is some inconvenience as I have to log on about once a month to refill my credit, but to me the few minutes spent is well worth the savings - usually over $50 per month relative to what most of my friends pay.

yes definitely not a doomer. He does seem to like passive income real estate which is paid for so that would be his safer investments I suppose. I like that he sweat equities his real estate. I enjoyed his recent posts on heat pumps and his older ones on DIY solar. I agreed with most of it which for energy/ diy build bloggers is damn impressive.

That makes sense, I forgot about that. I will definitely give his heat pump and solar stuff a read. If it has the NF seal of approval then I know it's good.  ;D

I like the money mustache guy. He had high high-tech income for his original nest egg but he puts out a solid blog... I've found his reflections on financial fear very helpful.

Yes he was my introduction to early retirement. Some things I have disagree with such as the 100% index allocation but i like just about everything else. I go back and read his stuff from time to time, and i always enjoy myself when I do.

Somehow I missed your reply RE. I'm taking welding to get better at a hobby, not as a career. I'm going into electrical for that, mostly because of all the trades it's the easiest on your body. There's the risk of shock and carpal tunnel from twisting wires together, but compared to the other trades (lung cancer for welding, bad knees and back for carpentry etc) I'd say it's pretty good.

I applied to the union last year but didn't get in sadly. Just called today to see what the process is for next year's application. I've heard the acceptance rate is higher for repeat applicants because they know you're really interested and not just tossing an application in. Worst case I don't get in again, and begin my hunt in my hometown for businesses looking to take on an apprentice. If absolutely no one can take me as an apprentice (there are 42 businesses in my area so this is not too likely) i will ask my favored businesses when they foresee a position opening up. Say one business has an apprentice moving to another company in 4 months from now. I just work as a laborer/helper, and that way the owner can see my work ethic and punctuality and all that. Then i hopefully take that person's spot once they're out of there. That's the plan at least.

Financially I know I will do well. Keeping debt levels low and living well below my means should keep things going smoothly. Basically the plan is to be earning a solid middle class income but spending far less than a typical middle class person. Then investing a lot of the extra, probably in Dogecoin. Okay no not Dogecoin, i have other plans but that would be funny. I'm also hanging around the early retirement extreme forums which is a great spot to learn about living frugally and investing, usually for the long-term.
